As part of the implementation of the integrated project “Optimization of Natura 2000 network management in Lithuania”, an impressive family-friendly event “Forest Whispers” took place in Samogitia on October 5. It attracted a record number of participants – more than 1,100.

The event, which is already in its sixth year, is growing every year and attracting more guests. “We see the burning, happy eyes of children when they get involved in exploring nature and are amazed to learn what magical things are happening there. We want to grow this unique event even more, offer a wider program, more innovations. Therefore, we aim to mobilize the support of both the state, business, and visitors,” says Rita Grinienė, the initiator of the festival and representative of the Baltic Environmental Forum.

Every year, the “Forest Whispers” area is decorated with various handmade decorations, the creation and renovation of which is contributed by many people. “We always strive to use the most natural materials possible, to apply them many times, to leave as little footprint on nature as possible. We are especially grateful to the large group of volunteers who dedicate their time to preparation, decorations and activities. Without the contribution of all these people, the event would not be possible,” says R. Grinienė.

At the “Forest Spells” guests had a unique opportunity to communicate with various heroes – kaukai, fairies, forest animals. One of the most anticipated events for children was a meeting with the King of Kaukai, who lives where nature is protected. In order to find Kaukai’s house, the children had to go through a maze and complete various tasks along the way.

The participants were also delighted by various educational, natural and artistic activities in the festival area. While playing, the participants could learn new things about wolves, lynxes, bats, owls. Everyone could make various magical souvenirs – wicker bracelets, rag dolls, bookmarks with dried plants, magic necklaces, pebbles that symbolize the promise to protect nature. Children competed in witches’ broom competitions, played the ancient game “Drive the Pig into the Barn” or simply threw hay. The hardy ones went on hikes, learned to disguise themselves in nature. And those with a sweet tooth could taste the magical rowan jam cooked on the spot over a bonfire.

The performances on the festival stage were given by students of the Plateliai Art School, Adrijus Alminas sang, and at the end everyone was entertained by the group “Kigidi karma” and Modestas. Finally, the heroes of “Forest Spells” gathered by the bonfire and enchanted everyone with the best spells that will accompany the festival guests all year long.

“Forest Spells” is an event during which people gather once a year to restore their connection with nature, – said Ramūnas Lydis, Director of the Samogitia National Park, at the end of the event. – We are glad that such a large group of children flock to Samogitia every year. After such an event, there is no doubt that there is hope for preserving the nature surrounding us. Only by understanding that we ourselves are a part of nature, will we give future generations the opportunity to live on a healthy Earth.
